For the Love of Oyster!

Oysters deliver beautiful, shimmering pearls. When cracking an oyster open, there’s always that hope of finding a delicate (and large) pearl within. But, you know, sometimes girls don’t want pearls! Sometimes we find more value in other objects. It would be great if oysters offered more variety of things other than just pearls. Pearls are nice, of course, but definitely not what I would like to open a pearl to find. I would love it if I cracked open an oyster and instead of finding a pearl, found a beautiful cut, polished ruby. Those deep red stones are my absolute favorite. I would love a ruby and diamond ring… that’s my dream wedding ring.

Ruby in my oyster!

Oysters are an enjoyable and healthy addition to the diet. However, there may be people who are at risk for serious illness or death from consuming raw or undercooked oysters. At risk groups can benefit from the Be Oyster Aware website that gives information about the proper way to prepare and eat Gulf oysters. The website is full of education material that teaches about Vibrio vulnificus, the symptoms of illness, and ways to determine if you are especially at risk. Also included are some great recipes for oysters! Personally, I think the Oysters Alfredo tastes delicious. Too bad you can’t crack open an oyster and have that already cooked and prepared inside the shell.

Okay, so it was arrogance that made me decide to walk during my graduation on May 10th of this year. I am getting a bachelors degree in history with a focus on education. The entire idea of sitting there in the hot sun bored with a stupid hat on does not appeal to me in the slightest. But I am going to do it because my mother really wants me to. I decided that it was worth it to do it for her since she helped me so much through college and it will make her so proud to see me walk with all my stoles and honor cords Summa Cum Laude.

So far, I have just ordered all of my honor society stoles and cords:

Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor Society)
Phi Alpha Theta StolePhi Alpha Theta Cord

Goldenkey (Top 15% Honor Society)
Golden Key StoleGolden Key Cord

Phi Kappa Phi (Top 7% Honor Society)
Phi Kappa Phi StolePhi Kappa Phi Cord

Go figure, though, that when I open my package from Phi Kappa Phi, all that was in there was the stole, no cord. Yeah, an honor society and the people who work there are apparently stupid. They sure as hell charged me for the cord, though. So, I contacted them on Thursday and as of today (Friday), I have not heard back. Naturally, the Phi Kappa Phi store was very quick to get my money, but they’re not so quick when it comes to support. Since I have already decided to wear the Phi Alpha Theta stole and the Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi cords, it’s pretty important that I get those cords.

Damn them.

I also got this in the mail Thursday:
Outstanding Graduate Lunch

So, I totally RSVP’d. I think I want to go.

Now, next step is cap and gown and announcements. And getting my damn cord from Phi Kappa Phi that they owe me.

Trusted Tours & Attractions is a great place to visit if you’re looking for excellent family vacation ideas. You can take your family on an Alcatraz tour, a tour of the city of Boston, of Las Vegas, New Orleans, and even Washington DC. There are tons of things to do in Washington DC, our nation’s capital and home of so many interesting museums and sites like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The last time I went to Washington DC, I visited with a group of friends who were getting their Doctorate degrees in International Relations. A conference was being held and I went along with them for the fun of it. The conference didn’t last long and then we had hours to spend wandering around, visiting museums, and taking in the sites.

There’s tons to do and tons to see, especially in such a politically charged place. I remember one woman who stood near where Pennsylvania Ave. began. She had a bullhorn, a stand, and a tent. And all of these strange faces drawn on paper plates. She stood there shouting to the crowd about the evils of the president. Then we walked towards the Smithsonian Museum to take in some culture when we ran smack into a HUGE group of people running around in animal suits. I’m still not sure if they were there in costume for some show or if they liked to dress like life sized animals. Nevertheless, I had my picture taken with them. You’ll meet a lot of strange people with a lot of strange political and social ideas in Washington DC, that’s for sure.

My life in the spotlight

I always keep a little black date book with me at all times. If you opened it up, you’d see a mess of different colored inks filling in lines underneath dates. Some are crossed out, replaces, arrows carry things over, and I have to really cram a whole bunch of stuff into little spaces.

Because in addition to the personal appointments I have to keep, I also use the date book as a way to keep track of what my students have to have. I have what lessons are on what days, what they have due on certain dates, and their homework readings/assignments. That way, all I have to do when I write up the plan for the day on the board is flip through my book and I know all of the when, whys, and hows.

Since I think there is somewhat of a social exhibitionist in me, I decided to make this book public via an online WP plugin calendar add-on. I am slowly adding the dates, the times, the subjects. Soon, you’ll see just how very packed and full my days really are…

Kettering University Ranked #1 With Leading Co-Op Program

An important part of education is real world experience. Not a lot of Universities properly immerse their students in job/career experience before they graduate and get into the field. True, internship are available and widely offered, but a lot of students still say that they are generally unprepared for the real experience that awaits them once they have their diploma in hand.

Kettering University offers a quality co-op program to students for that real world experience in job/career fields that are so much needed. US News and World Report has ranked Kettering University as “the #1 University in the nation for Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering” in its annual “America’s Best Colleges Guide for 2008″.

When students enter their freshman year, Kettering University places them in a company and rotates them between classes and co-op job every three months. They offer everything from engineering co-op programs to co-op opportunities in industrial engineering. Better yet, as a co-op student, you also earn a professional salary! This is much better than the University internships during which you only earn class credits and no money at all. No doubt future employers will love the amount of experience gained by the time of graduation, all really excellent details to put on a resume.

Passing VCLA Scores

In order to become a teacher, you have to pass three tests (which you have to pay for out of pockets, those fleecing bastards): Praxis I, Praxis II, and VCLA. I’ve taken both of the Praxis tests, one which is a reading/writing/math test and the other a content area specific test for social studies. They were both passed and out of the way before I began my student teacher internship.

So, a friend and I both signed up to take the VCLA about a week and a half ago. Our scheduled times varied from 11-12:30 (I had the 12:30 appointment) n a Saturday, which was fine with me because I knew that Alfee would take me out to eat afterwards. That’s always a good incentive to getting out of the house. I really loathed to wake up early on a Saturday what with how exhausted I am after a week of teaching, but it has to be done in order to be completely certified, which I want to be by the time I am done with internship so that I can get a contract somewhere.

Anywho, I log on tonight and in my email box are my ‘unofficial scores’ (unofficial because they are sent special in the mail, I suppose). My total score was a 560. A score of 470, I believe, is the minimum passing. So, I was well above the minimum score.
